Dhāraṇī Sutra 陀羅尼

The full title of the work is The Sutra of the Vast, Great, Perfect, Full, Unimpeded Great Compassion [[Heart Dhāraṇī]] of the Thousand-Handed]] Thousand-Eyed]] Bodhisattva Who Regards the World's Sounds.This Sutra tells of the past causes and conditions of the Bodhisattva of Great Compassion, Regarder of the World's Sounds Avalokiteśvara, and of the various ways of practicing the Great Compassion Mantra. It is a fundamental text of the Esoteric School (FIVE TYPES OF BUDDHIST STUDY AND PRACTICEesoteric).

The Buddhist text currently considered to be the standard in most of East Asia is the shorter version, specifically the one found in the 'Sūtra of the Vast, Perfect, Unimpeded Great-Compassionate Heart of the Thousand-Handed Thousand-Eyed Bodhisattva Avalokitasvara's Dhāraṇī' (Chinese: 千手千眼觀世音菩薩廣大圓滿無礙大悲心陀羅尼經; pinyin: Qiānshǒu qiānyǎn Guānshìyīn púsà guǎngdà yuánmǎn wúài dàbēixīn tuóluóní jīngT. 1060, K. 0294) translated by a monk from western India named Bhagavaddharma (Chinese: 伽梵達摩; pinyin: Jiāfàndámó, birth and death dates unknown) between 650 and 660 CE.
